Ever since we decided we wanted our dried herbs and spices to be organic we started buying them in bulk. It seems a little expensive at first but when you break down the cost per ounce it’s ridiculously cheaper than buying by the jar in the store. We usually buy a pound at a time which can be A LOT of seasoning but it means we can do a lot of different things, like make our own seasoning blend like this Italian Seasoning or Dairy Free Ranch seasoning. We get a majority of our herbs and spices right here. Our local health food store also has bulk herbs and we’ll go there in a pinch as well.
Making your own spice blends is so easy, just combine the ingredients in a jar and shake it up. We use wide mouth containers like these to store our seasonings. I love that the wide mouth makes it easy to use a teaspoon or a tablespoon. So much easier than using a little too much trying to pour the seasoning into the spoon because the container isn’t big enough to fit a teaspoon or tablespoon.
I like to shake my jar before every use to try and make sure that the seasoning is evenly distributed before using. Depending on what type of seasoning you’re making some of the ingredients might be heavier and sink to the bottom while the light stuff stays on top. If you don’t shake it the seasoning won’t be balanced.
