Did you have a baby book growing up? I still have mine, the beginning is filled out but tapers off rather quickly. And no, I’m not the second child, in fact, I’m the oldest so you would think the whole thing would be filled out. But it’s not. Mason doesn’t have a baby book either. Not a traditional one at least. Instead he has this blog, same for Kyla. This blog is how I document their baby milestones, it’s how I document their entire lives.
There are so many different ways that you can document baby milestones the best ways all involve pictures to go along with the milestones. Documenting your baby’s milestones can be easy with these ideas!
1) Traditional Baby Book: You can’t go wrong with a traditional baby book and honestly I love that it’s not a digital option! There is something special about a child looking back on it and seeing their mom or dad’s handwriting. I’m super excited to see The Simplified Baby Book by Emily Ley! I have her daily planner and love it!
2) Email Account: Have something to say to your baby? Set them up an email account, write to them during milestones, birthdays, and whenever the feeling strikes. I feel like I can type quicker than I can write so I really like this idea especially since you can send pictures and videos as well. You decide when your child gets access to the account, some say 18 but I like the idea of doing it when they’re a little older!
3) Blog: As a blogger who started off thinking only her family would read (are you guys even still out there?) what she had to say I couldn’t not include a blog as a way to document your baby’s milestones! My blog is public but you can choose to make it private if you prefer. It’s a great quick and easy way to document your baby’s life!
4) Pictures turned into a photo book: This is a twist on a traditional baby book. Everything is done digitally via a site like Tiny Prints or Shutterfly but you can still print it out and have a physical copy!
5) Pictures turned to Video: Tech savvy? Turning your favorite pictures into videos set to your favorite song will most likely bring you to tears every time you see it! Windows Movie Maker or Adobe Premiere Elements can help make it much easier on you!
The star of the show with any of these options are the pictures. I LOVE these ideas for different ways to document your little one’s growth. First I have to start with the chalkboard. It’s what I did with Kyla and I love how it turned out! I made my own chalkboard and purchased these chalkboard pens.
With Mason we get birthday shirts and take a picture of him in the shirt on his birthday and and then the day before his birthday for the next year. It really helps document how much he’s changed throughout the years. Here’s Mason from his 4th year as an example!
Putting them in the same spot and taking a weekly or monthly picture is another great idea. There are quite a few ways that you can do this and many also provide a variation on the blackboard idea. I love this play on this idea by Shauna Veasy.

Not creative? Don’t worry. You can purchase these baby milestone cards, once they do a milestone just take a quick picture of them with the card!
Another great idea is putting them next to the same object or stuffed animal for every monthly photo because it helps show just how big they’ve grown. I did this with Mason
But not nearly as good as this take on it.
They key to all these type of photos are continuity. Have something in the picture, besides your baby that always stays the same. It could be what they wear, where the picture is taken or what it’s in the photo with your baby.
Most of all have FUN documenting these milestones. As a mama to a boy who just turned 5 I promise you it goes by so quickly! Feel free to get silly with it too. Document ALL the milestones even if it seems silly like “First Ponytail” or first “headband” or “First time you peed on mama”.
The one thing I hope it takes you a LONG TIME to document? Baby’s first cough.
