About a year ago I was watching an episode of Teen Mom where one of the mothers paid for a team of people to come in and professionally baby proof her home. I remember it costing something slightly outrageous. Then one of the mothers in my Mom’s group mentioned that she had it done too and the price was equally outrageous.
I think the reason I thought it was so insane was because I’m not a huge baby proofer. I do basics, the most important stuff and then everything else is just there for the learning. No toilet seat fasteners ala Baby Mama. Ain’t nobody got time for that!
But there are certain things that are a MUST to baby proof. So here’s 5 things you need to baby proof RIGHT THIS MOMENT. The rest of it? It can wait or GASP. Never be done! It’s all about what YOU feel comfortable and most importantly SAFE about.
1. Your Corners: What do I mean by corners? Basically any corner in your house that is at eye level with your baby. Two examples are coffee tables and fire places. It doesn’t seem like a big one until your baby’s eye/head meet said corner and suddenly you’re going to wish you baby proofed with corner cushions.
2. Your TV: If you have a flat screen TV you’re going to want to anchor it to the wall. If your child is a climber and they get to the TV it won’t take them long for them to pull the TV down on top of them. They’re very top heavy when compared to their base.
3. Any Cabinet You Keep Cleaning Supplies In: Most of my cabinets do not have any type of lock on them except for the one under my kitchen sink and bathroom sink. Why? Because that’s where I keep my cleaning supplies. And while I’m working towards greener and saferĀ cleaning supplies(thank you Young Living) there are still things I don’t want either of my kids getting too.
4. Your Dressers: Just like with the TV if you have a child climbing on the furniture it can very easily topple over on them especially if they use the stairs as drawers. Very often this results in an unspeakable tragedy. Don’t let it be your child, your family and instead anchor your furniture to the wall.
5.Your Outlets–This is a big one in my humble opinion and best of all it’s one of the easiest and cheapest things you can do! You can get a rather large pack of outlets covers for under $5. They have all sorts of options out there too.
Safety1st has a bunch of these products that can help you get started and a quick run to Target or Babies R Us will give you more than enough options to suit your needs!
Have you baby proofed yet? Is there anything you think I missed?
