I love this book for so many reasons.
Beautiful Illustrations
This book has beautiful Illustrations.
They had Mason cracking up the entire time. I would finish the page by asking him if that’s where baby’s come from. So in this example I would say, “Did you and Kyla hatch from eggs?”.
It Tells the Truth
At the end of the book the little boy tells his parents all the things that he learned and they tell him where babies really come from. What I love about it is they tell the truth. They illustrate a sperm and an egg and say “They begin with a seed from their dad which gets planted in an egg inside their mom”.
At the end of the book they answer typical questions you may get more in depth using real words like “sperm”, “penis” and “vagina”. This part is not apart of the actual story itself but in the back. It’s an easy to understand explanation and age appropriate.
I love the Q & A at the end of the book because it’s really important to me that my children know the proper terms and the truth about where babies comes from which is one of the many reasons why I allowed Mason to attend Kyla’s birth!
Bonus
It mentions that some babies are born at home! I love this. Not all babies are born in hospitals (Kyla wasn’t) so it’s nice to see an alternative mentioned!
I’m not the only one who loves The Baby Tree!
“Blackall once again excels at portraying a thoughtful child with a rich inner life” —Publishers Weekly, Starred Review
“Blackall’s text is straightforward, calm, and reassuring without being clinical. Her Chinese-ink and watercolor illustrations make the most of the narrator’s imaginative flights of fancy…cute as a button.” —The Horn Book, Starred Review
“A delightfully age-appropriate way to give young children the facts about contraception and birth…Another wonderful contribution from Blackall.”
—School Library Journal, Starred Review
