Anxiety and worrying are a large part of the territory that come with being a mother. Come bedtime, every new mama watches her sleeping baby for movement of any kind to make sure that they are still breathing. You hear countless stories of mothers doing everything they should be, yet somehow they still end up suffering through the unexpected and unexplainable loss of their child due to SIDS. I remember when I first brought Jacob home from the hospital. One of the reasons we decided to co-sleep was so that I could keep a closer eye on him throughout the night. Once he finally moved to a crib (14 months later), I would still watch him intently on the video monitor for any chest movements to make sure that he was breathing. I just wanted peace of mind.
My second son, Brady, was born just over a month ago, and while some of the anxiety of being a first time mom has worn off, I’m still scared of losing a child to SIDS. Just before Brady was born, Christa told me about the Snuza Hero and sent me a Hero monitor to try out!
The Hero is a portable baby movement monitor that clips onto the baby’s diaper. It detects the child’s breathing through abdomen movements. The monitor has a tiny light that blinks green if it is detecting normal abdominal movements. Shallow or weak breathing will make the monitor flash orange. If the Hero doesn’t recognize any movement after 15 seconds, it vibrates to rouse the child. This will also change the flashing light to red. If the child does not move after 5 additional seconds, an alarm will sound to wake the parent.
I found that one major advantange to the Hero (for me, at least!) was the fact that it is 100% portable. Brady can be sleeping in the crib, on my bed, in the Pack N Play, or anywhere else that is not moving (such as a car or swing) and it can be used. Most movement monitors are stuck in one place and are restricted by cords that plug into the wall. It is also pocket-sized, so it’s easy to toss into the diaper bag for daycare or a weekend trip!
Another advantage is that the Hero can be used on disposable or cloth diapers. This was a huge plus for me since we primarily use cloth diapers. I did find that I had to clip it onto a different area of the diaper when using cloth, though.
As well, if your baby is a stomach-sleeper, you can still use the Hero by attaching it to a different area of the diaper.
The bottom line is that I wish I would have known about the Snuza Hero when my first son was born. It would have given me the peace of mind I was looking for and I would have been a well-rested mama! I’m so glad that Christa told me about it this time around because we all know how much I need my sleep with a newborn AND a toddler!
The Snuza Hero is available at BuyBuyBaby, BabiesRUs, Target.com and Diapers.com
