When you think of a monitor, I’m sure you think of it as being for babies. The generic term after all is, baby monitor. And once your baby no longer becomes a baby you pack it up and you wait for the next baby to use it for, or maybe you pass it along to a friend.
But what if I told you that I’m finding it most useful at the ripe old age of 5? What if I told you that BABY monitors aren’t just good for babies? Mason, who just turned 5, like many kids, doesn’t like to go to sleep at night. He’s always telling me about how he wishes he was a grown up so that he never has to sleep. Ironically enough of course all we adults want *is* sleep. But that’s another topic altogether. The key to the monitors for the over 3 crowd is being able to talk to them.
As I mentioned before, Mason doesn’t like sleep, he doesn’t like feeling like he’s missing out on something. Mason constantly gets out of bed and has for years. He gets out to go to the bathroom a million and one times, he gets out to tell me he needs to blow his nose, he gets out to tell me that he loves me. He gets out to tell me a bright idea he had. Now the first two? I can’t help those. Even though he does those things far more than normal at bedtime they’re legitimate and when it comes to #3 it’s hard for me to be upset when he’s telling me how much he loves me and even #4 can be cute if I’m in the right mood ;).
What the VTech Safe&Sound® Pan & Tilt Full Color Video Baby Monitor changes is that he no longer has to get out of bed to tell me he loves me or tell me his ideas or plans for the next day. All he has to do is talk in a normal voice and I will hear him and I can talk back, and he can stay nice and cozy in his bed.
Speaking of nice and cozy this monitor also displays the temperature of the room which I really love since Mason’s room (and the rooms on that side of the house) can get really cold.
From the monitor I can can move the camera to the exact position I need it to be in, up, down, side to side and I can zoom in. Since we mainly use it at night what’s most important to me is the camera’s “night vision”.
Since this is a picture of a picture it’s not as accurate of how clear it is, but I can assure you it is. I could easily see where Mason was at all times.
Being able to talk to Mason without yelling up the stairs or physically going up the stairs has really changed things for us. He can tend to have nightmares and talk in his sleep and when he starts doing that I can hear him more clearly and soothe him. Which means he’s not getting out of bed looking for comfort because in his half asleep mind, I’m right there!
I can see this being HUGE for Kyla as I transition her to being in a room by herself and not next to me at all times. Yes, I’m that mom.
