Can You Hear What I Hear?

Late last year as my friend and I walked with our kids to the local college football game it became apparent that Mason couldn’t hear me the way he should be able to hear me. He was running far ahead of me but when I called out to him it was clear that he couldn’t hear me. At first I thought that maybe I was imaging things. But when I brought it up to my friend she thought the same thing. I mentioned it to B but he brushed me off–“He can hear, he’s just not listening”.

Then one night while I was putting the girls to bed, B and Mason were playing cards. When I came to get Mason to put him to bed B called me downstairs and told me “watch this”. He began saying things to Mason that he knew would make Mason upset and Mason had no reaction at all, because he couldn’t hear him and he was just a couple of feet in front of him. While I know I shouldn’t have, I couldn’t help but say, “I told you so”.

The very next day I made an appointment for Mason. I wanted to see what was going on. I was worried, I won’t lie,  I immediately started thinking the worse–permanent hearing loss. I didn’t have to wait long to find my answer. When the doctor arrived in the room it didn’t take him long to tell me that Mason’s ears were “a mess” thanks to ear infections and that “of course” he had hearing loss but it was only temporary.

While everything ended up just fine for other family members in different circumstances it wasn’t just fine. There is hearing loss, permanent hearing loss.
