When it comes to being Green and ridding toxins from our home and bodies, B and I like to think that we’re on top of things but truth be told me have a lot of room for improvement. That was never more clear then when I attended the Virtual Healthy Baby Home Party with Seventh Generation, Healthy Child Healthy World & Stonyfield Organic. This video was yet another wake up call (we seem to have one every week).
B and I watched this video and attended the party together. I’m lucky that I have a partner who wants to get rid of the toxins in our home and become more “Green”. There are some things that we’re doing great in and others that we’re not doing great in at all. Sometimes it’s a struggle to find things that work and are also gentle on the environment and our home.
We have failed over and over again (ahem processed foods). But we are still striving to be better. We want to be better for the environment but even more so for ourselves and our children. After the party we discussed things that we were doing well and things we still needed to do.
Here are some things we discussed:
Go Organic.
Buying organic is one of the easiest ways that you can get rid of some of the toxins in your life and “go green”. We started with buying organic milk, and local organic eggs. Can’t buy Organic? The next best thing is local.
Organic can be more expensive but the money spent on organic can be saved elsewhere especially if you…
Limit Processed Foods
This isn’t easy. It’s the thing that we’ve struggled with the most however it is a MUST to start limiting processed foods. We’ve started by not buying as many canned goods or anything that comes in a box. Shop your Farmer’s Market and the aisle on the perimeter of the store. Cutting out or limiting your processed foods will also help you save money!
Switch out your Cleaning Supplies
Opt for products that are friendly on the environment and your home. Seventh Generation is a great option and it’s what we’ve been using in our home even in our bathroom! It works amazing and I would know, we do Eliminate Communication with Kyla so I spend a lot of time close to my toilet 😉 You can also make your own cleaning supplies!
Switch Out Your Bath Products
We do really well in this area when it comes to the kids but not so well when it comes to us. Shampoo, body wash, conditioner, face wash, lotion, these are all things that you put on your body on a (hopefully) frequent basis. We use the Skin Deep Database before purchasing anything for our kids and soon ourselves!
Talk Off Your Shoes When You Walk Inside
This is another one we’re not so good at. I tend to walk around with my shoes on as does B and Mason but it’s something we’ve discussed and something that we want to change. According to Healthy Child, Healthy World 85 percent of the dirt in our homes is tracked inside on the bottom of our shoes. Take them off at the door, don’t drag them into your house! Make others take off their shoes as well.
Bonus Tip? If you can get rid of your carpets, so many dust mites and more can get trapped into your carpet so it’s best to avoid carpets. Here’s a great article from Healthy Child.
