Not only is it national bread month but this year also marks the 250th anniversary of the sandwich!
We are HUGE sandwich people, I think it has a lot to do with being from NY. There are deli’s EVERYWHERE there. And one of the first things I do when I go home is get a Bacon, Egg and Cheese on a Round Roll
Technically speaking you can get a Bacon, Egg and Cheese on a Round Roll with Salt, Pepper, Ketchup (SPK) elsewhere but it is just not the same unless it’s in NY. First off in VA we don’t have deli’s like the one in NY. We have one but they don’t have round rolls they have Kaiser rolls which are NOT the same.
Gah. Guess you have to be from NY to know what I’m talking about!
Apparently I really love breakfast sandwiches because I also really love the Bacon Egg and Cheese McGriddle but it can get expensive and it’s certainly not super good for you so I made a homemade McGriddle which is delicious too!
Sandwiches aren’t just good for breakfast though they’re also great for lunch! Mason’s go to is a classic peanut butter and jelly on whole wheat!
Pre-pregnancy my go to was always a ham and cheese with mayo!
Want more sandwich ideas? Celebrity Chef Bryan Voltaggio has a bunch of recipes you can check out! Personally I want to try the Banana, PB and Honey for Mason!
Sadly I know some of you are looking at this post longing for that bread that you haven’t had in years because of the carbs but I just want to say PICK UP THE BREAD. STOP the strike! Bread is good for you especially when whole and enriched grains are used. Both whole grains and enriched grains are a good source of complex carbohydrates which your body needs for energy. Personally I make sure to continue to eat enriched grains because it’s a major source of iron and folic acid in my diet which is really important since I’m pregnant!
Like anything else you put in your body just remember everything in moderation. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend eating six one ounce servings of grain foods each day!
