- When I was about six years old my Mom was working on her degree to become a nurse. I remember her going to school, working full time and being a full time mom. Did I mention she did the last 10 months of schooling pregnant? I was so impressed with her.
- She didn’t become a nurse right away though. Instead she waited almost 16 years before she took the plunge and started working as a nurse. She knew that nursing would provide job security which is always important. How did she know that? Right now we are at a severe shortage nationwide for nurses. Right now there are over 100,000 jobs available for nurses and that number is projected to grow to 800,000 jobs by 2012. That’s a scary thing to think about. Think of all the amazing nurses you’ve had. How would your hospital experience have been without them. She left her job to become a nurse for more than job security though, she also knew she’d be doing something she always wanted to do, help people.
- And help people she does. Just like in her home life she is caring and compassionate something that you need to be when you work on the Oncology floor with cancer patients. Many of which will not make it. Her hospital is small so many of the patients there are either just being diagnosed or nearing the end of their journey. She deals with family members just finding out and those that are saying good bye. It’s a hard place to work but my Mom does it with so much grace. In the last 4-5 years that she’s been working as a nurse people have approached her outside of her job while we’ve been out to Thank her for the kindness that she showed to their loved one. Not all nurses go above and beyond the way that she does.
- Thank God for nurses who truly care about their patients, their needs and their wishes.
- Right now Johnson & Johnson is having an “Amazing Nurses Contest” where you can nominate a nurse to featured as one of CNN Heroes in 2012. The nurse and a guest will attend the 2012 CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute Show in LA and be honored in a video profile which will be screened before the live audience at the show and featured in Nursing Notes by Johnson & Johnson Facebook page.

I truly salute to all nurses because they are the one taking care of us when we are in the hospital as a patient. I love to hear some inspiring stories that nurses have.
