Before moving to Virgina I had never heard of Food Lion but it quickly became my go to grocery store. My Sophomore and Junior year I lived less than a mile away from Food Lion. My Senior year less than two miles and NOW less than one. It’s like I’m destined to shop there OR maybe they just have a lot of locations in the ‘Burg 😉
Actually that’s exactly the case. They have three locations all within 5 miles of my house. It’s awesome to know that no matter what part of town I’m in Food Lion is right there.
My only problem with Food Lion is that sometimes the prices are a little high on certain items (except on meat, I can’t even begin to explain to you the deals I get on meat!!). But now all that has changed. They’ve lowered their prices AND have brought in coupon kiosks that help you save even more money!
What I’ve ALWAYS loved about Food Lion is the deals on meat! I swear I have never seen these kind of deals anywhere else, trust me I look!
See all those pinkish tags? Those are the sale prices. Most of them are a 50% off savings! We always buy a ton of meat whenever we find it on sale and then freeze it. My freezer is stocked right now with whole chicken roasters because they were all more than 50% off the other day!
Food Lion has also become my go too for basics thanks to their “My Essentials” line it’s all the basics for great prices. This comes in especially handy for my baking needs since really that’s all baking requires, the basics: sugar, flour, butter and vanilla <—what that’s not a basic in your house!?.
Food Lion sent me this great kit to help celebrate the new them:
That wooden box is a recipe holder (which is awesome because I don’t have one) and inside they had some recipes. When I saw their Sugar Cookie Recipe I knew I had to give it a try! So here goes:
First you want to combine the 5 cups of flour, 1sp of salt and 2 tsps of baking powder in a medium size bowl and set aside. Then whisk together 1 1/2 cup softened butter and 1/3 cup softened cream cheese
Cream together the eggs and butter, then add 3 cups of sugar
Beat in the eggs
Add the tablespoon of vanilla and tsp of almond extract
Mix it up then slowly add the flour mixture
Until it’s all incorporated
Refrigerate for at least one hour!
When the dough is ready spread SUGAR on your rolling surface and roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thick
Using cookie cutters cut our your desired shapes. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and bake at 400 degrees for 6-8 minutes. I LOVE how quickly they cook and how soft they come out:

This recipe is a little time consuming because you have to wait an hour for the dough to be ready but it’s totally worth it!
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Set up your cookie sheets by lining them with parchment paper
- Sift the flour, baking power and salt into a medium size bowl and set aside.
- Cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs. Add the vanilla and almond.
- 1 cup at a time add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture.
- Cover and chill the dough for at least 1 hour.
- Roll the dough out on a sugared surface to 1/2 inch thick.
- Cut into shapes of your choice.
- Bake for 6-8 minutes.
