Just Finished: Sweet Valley Confidential

Now with this striking new adult novel from author and creator Francine Pascal, millions of devoted fans can finally return to the idyllic Sweet Valley, home of the phenomenally successful book series and franchise. Iconic and beloved identical twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield are back and all grown up, dealing with the complicated adult world of love, careers, betrayal, and sisterhood.

When I realized that Sweet Valley was coming out with a *NEW* Sweet Valley book I was beyond excited! I even blogged about the rumored book back when I was pregnant.

The book starts off with Elizabeth moving to NY after a huge betrayal from her sister Jessica and her fiance Todd Wilkins. The book is told mainly from the viewpoint of Elizabeth and Jessica with flashbacks from previous books in the series.

One thing I was disappointed in is that I read Sweet Valley Senior Year  a series that followed Jessica, Elizabeth and most of the gang to a combined High School after a HUGE earthquake where they lost a close friend {who’s name I can’t remember for the life of me although I do remember that her boyfriends was Ken Matthews}. In this series Elizabeth and Todd go there separate ways because they don’t mess anymore and we explore a side of Jessica we didn’t know she had, insecure, compassionate, loyal etc. This book completely ignores that series and caters to the fans of the 1980s. The original Sweet Valley High series portrayed Jessica as a manipulative, vapid girl with no depth and while they have tried to stray from that in this book her over use of the work “like” is like very like annoying. I know she’s a “Valley Girl” but jeez give it a rest.

I also wasn’t that happy with the over use of things that are currently relevant to today’s society like “Facebook” and “Perez Hilton”. Good books don’t need those references to make it good! Maybe that’s just me though.

I will say that Francine Pascal wasn’t concerned about everything being the Sweet Valley High of the past. For one there is a lot of sex and one of the characters even turns out gay. A major character at that. One thing hasn’t changed, Jessica is still completely vapid and selfish but somehow she still gets the happy ending with someone elses guy? How does that happen? I guess it always did work out for Jessica in SVH.

Disclosure: I was sent Sweet Valley High Confidential: Ten Years Later for review purposes only, opinions are 100% my own.
